Stockholm part II

Since one of my lovely Swedes is taking her sweet time to get the rest of the photos to me, but I wanted to reminisce about Stockholm already, I decided to start in reverse, with part II of my Swedish adventure with my friends Anna & Jeanna (from here on in A&J)!

After an early rise (8am), however nowhere near as early as the sunrise (3am!!!), we started the day in the best way, with a wander around Anna's island. Anna lives on an island called Lilla Essingen, the little sister of Stor (big) Essingen, so it's only a 2km walk around.

But as we know, bigger isn't always better since Lilla Essignen also has a lilla treasure to offer (apart from Anna)! The Lux Dessert & Choklad shop. Even if you don't speak Swedish, you should be able to figure this out. Unfortunately they don't appear to have a website (???), but I found one photo here, so at least you can see how the shop is designed like a jewelry shop, and all the pastry goodies including of course kannelbullar (cinnamon buns), are safely tucked away in glass drawers. You get the idea, this place is fancy! So fancy in fact, that owner and confectioner Ted Johansson, created the dessert menu for the Nobel Prize banquet in 2005! Oh la la!

Before heading home for frukost (breakfast), we finished the morning walk with a refreshing dip off Anna's wharf! (photos to come...)

We opted for a lemony loaf of sourdough. Fluffy as foam on the inside, engulfed in a crispy crust.

As well as three lilla kannelbullar! I'm missing the "proper" photos of these, which I'll have to update later since they were a work of art, but this is already a demonstration of how they are best consumed...

Dipped in chai latte. Hmmmmm...

In addition to this treat, we also had a Skype session with our classiest bird, Princess N. She will be departing for the land of dreams, Americuuuuh in a couple of weeks to be a real Princess at Disneyland. Since our only New Year's resolution was to have the next NY in NY, we obviously had to sport our New York City uniforms.

After many giggles it was almost lunchtime, so while Anna's ball of ginger fluff Tuve (Tuve is the Swedish word for those knots you get when you haven't brushed your hair in a while...) was still having a snooze, we went to shop.

This is the Queen Street equivalent, basically the main shopping street.

And we meandered on to the King's Gardens.

Before taking a trip to (yet another!) island.

We passed some pretty buildings.

We passed the theme park.

We even passed some Vikings!

Until we reached the shores of our destination. At this stage I was slightly concerned since you can see, the shores were not only rocky, but absolutely covered in people. In New Zealand, these rocks would be covered in seals, and you would have the beach all to yourself! But we were still optimistic we'd find ourselves a spot, and we did. With this view:

Quite cute I thought. You can just make out the Swedish flag flying proudly by the second red building. That place was a restaurant where we planned to have lunch, until we saw the prices...Sweden is expensive period. But these "holiday islands" seem to be worse, since they know people have no other options on the island. Of course you'd rather pay double than starve! Me of all people can empathise with that. But we were still content from breakkie, so we made our way back to the city.

The day before we had had lunch at the most delicious place (more on that hopefully tomorrow!), and they also had amazing cakes, so we decided to head back and give those a try.

Really what made this place amazing was the view back over the city.

After we finished our cake, we decided that we now needed something savoury and since it was pretty much dinnertime we headed straight back to Anna's island for pizza.

(Surprisingly) we had some red wine left over from the night before that Jeanna had bought, so we could celebrate her getting into architecture school! Gratis Jeanna!!! So we headed back down to the park on the harbour down the hill from Anna's place where we shared a winning smoked shrimp pizza, while Jeanna demolished a 'Kebab pizza' all by herself. I was impressed.

Apparently in Sweden you cut your pizza with scissors. Classy.

After the sun set and it instantly cooled off, we headed home for dessert. The last time J visited A, A had made her chocolate fondant, and J was determined to have some. In the end, Jeanna ended up making it herself and we got to indulge in the fruits of her labour.

Harmless from the outside.

Gooey, molten chocolate danger on the inside. Topped off with the leftover homemade vanilla ice cream from the night before. I'm the first to admit I'm a chocolate fiend, but even I couldn't quite manage all of it...

We headed to bed pretty soon after, since we had to get up at 4:30am, really "we" didn't have to since I was the only one that needed to catch a flight at 7am, but A&J were kind enough to see me off right to the end. I think Anna just wanted an excuse to drive me around in her new car... :)

That's all for today, back to writing cover letters!

Your truly,
Fräulein SoulFood x
