From D.U.M.B.(O.) to Empire State of Mind

I was going to wait until N finally got round to transferring any NYC photos that she took on her camera, but I have so many new Munich experiences to catch you up on, that I'm over waiting and keen to move on through our NYC adventure...

Day three began gloriously! Upon recommendation of our Airbnb hosts we decided to make the most of the splendid weather and enjoy a ride on the ferry which departed just around the corner from us.

Follow me!
For some reason I was expecting a casual, sailing-style ferry ride. But like anything in New York City, it was super-speed! Turns out, floaty summer skirts are not ideal attire for such undertakings. Of course we didn't want to miss any photo-opps, but our attempts to simultaneously hold down our skirts and ensure our dignity stayed in tact were just futile.

There really wasn't much we could do except stand butt to butt, take pictures in opposite directions and try to contain our embarrassed giggles.

We were headed for D.U.M.B.O., (aka 'Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass'), an area which I had read was not to be missed for superb views across to Manhattan, as well as the connection for a spectacular walk across the Brooklyn Bridge. We were keen for a stroll along the water, as well as some breakkie.

When in New York City, one must try a lobster roll. Naturally I had done my research in this department also, and as it turned out one of the highly recommended joints, 'Luke's Lobster' was right beneath the Brooklyn Bridge. How convenient…

We ordered 'Noah's Ark' which is essentially the "bit of everything"-version, for two: lobster, crab and shrimp rolls, soda, chips and of course a pickle each!

Now for 11am that was one heck of a lot of seafood! And while the buttery buns with the fresh "sea-ness" of the seafood worked wonderfully with the zingy pickle, it was full on! I think next time I would stick to one (the prawn roll was my favourite!), and really relish it.

With new found strength we headed for the Brooklyn Bridge to meander across to Manhattan. Stupidly I didn't take my own photos since N was snapping away already, but unfortunately this was all that she had uploaded prior to her phone getting stolen. But it is the money shot!

It is a bit of a mission to cross, since you are walking with what feels like all the tourists in New York, as well as getting told off by local bikers when you have to walk in the cycle lane to overtake some of those dawdling tourists, but it's worth it.

After our plentiful walking, we decided it was time for a bit of r&r, and where better to do that than in Central Park?!

We found ourselves a giant boulder to lie on, and had a bit of a catnap in the sun. Unfortunately the weather had got temperamental by this time, and we thought it better leave the blossoms behind and head for The Plaza - 'coz we so fancy!

There we discovered a fancy food hall.

As well as the fancy Plaza shop, with this very informative bag:

I was tempted to buy it, but chose another (which I will show you soon!). Back above ground we popped around the corner to the even fancier Fifth Avenue.

Before detouring for some L.O.V.E.!

As the dreary grey washed over the clear, blue sky, we really weren't sure whether our scheduled visit to the Empire State Building was such a good idea. However, we were in the right 'hood and gambled on a decent sunset. And the gamble payed off!

This reminds me of the perfect little Lego city!
But this was obviously the place to be:

Where was our invite?!
Although here also wouldn't be too shabby:

By the time we got back down to street level we were chilled through to the bone. Don't let the evening glow deceive you! There is an icy wind up there!

We ran through a hot shower, put on some pants and headed for the cozy looking Sardinian place around the corner - D.O.C. Wine Bar (check out the link to see the super cool fireplace out the back!).

After much to-ing and fro-ing we ordered two dishes each, so that the tiny candlelit table threatened to collapse.

I had the special which turned out to be a veggie lasagna (which was secretly what I had hoped it would be!), and the 'Croccantini di Pana Carasau' - typical Sardinian bread chips with creamy Pecorino dip and almond salsa. Oh and bubbles, to wash down all those rich Mediterranean flavours and appreciate them all over again in the next forkful!

N went for some roasted beets and the 'I Pistokku' - typical Sardinian crispy bread topped with various toppings and melted cheese…enough said?! She went for the 'Bresaola' which also had rocket, goat cheese and Mozzarella.

All in all, another very satisfying, soul-feeding day in NYC!

Yours truly,
Fräulein SoulFood x
