Bagels, Baseball & 'The High Line'

Sunday was our last full day in NYC, and it began with yet another market.

Unfortunately this one just had a bit too much junk for my taste. Give me a food market instead of flea market any day! Speaking of food, I still had one item to cross of my "New Yorker food"-bucket list. And that item was a real American bagel with cream cheese and 'lox' (Yiddish for smoked salmon). There happened to be a triathlon/bikeathon on, so after we finally managed to cross the road safely, we headed to Cafe Biba for breakfast.

And there I could get my bagel-fix!

While N dug into an almond-croissant.

Obviously I'd said something funny! :)
We couldn't chit-chat for too long, since we had one final, typically American event to attend - watching the Yankees on their home-turf versing the Tampa Bay Rays.

We didn't really have a clue as to how the game works, but after five days of missioning through the city, we were content to just sit and soak up the atmosphere around us.

These guys did a little dance while re-flattening whatever that red area is called…

After three hours we were ready to move on again. One of the first things I learned about  New York (even before any Sex and the City references!), was that it had The High Line. The master architectural plan was the brainchild of Diller Scofidio + Renfro, an interdisciplinary design studio that was one of my main sources of inspiration during my Spatial Design studies. There was no way I could leave the city without a visit to this elevated park. Our only problem: finding it!

Apparently New Yorkers do not know of this place as The High Line, because everyone we asked in the neighbourhood where it should've been, had no idea what we were talking about. In the end we kind of stumbled upon it!

From The High Line you get a great perspective of the perfectly grid-like streets of New York which seem to stretch all the way to the horizon.

Perfectly colour coordinated!

The High Line was originally built in the 1930's to elevate all the industrial traffic off the street to avoid further accidents. Original elements of this historic structure still remain, such as the railway lines, but The High Line has been given a new lease of life as an elevated city park and outdoor gallery.

It connects different warehouses throughout the city, one of which now houses the Chelsea Market.

By the time we were done with our leisurely stroll, and caught the subway back to Williamsburg, we came home just in time for one final ripper sunset over Manhattan.

Before heading out to our final "Classy Birds in New York City" supper. We headed around the corner, a corner which has a very cool concept shop - 'Space Ninety 8'

To a quaint little restaurant called 'Sweetwater', that we had discovered on our first night in the 'hood, and promised ourselves to return to!

According to their website, the building was a sailor's hideaway in the 1920's, as well as a punk club once upon a time. You would never be able to tell now!

Since we had only had fries for lunch (food at baseball games is expensive!), I was famished! Thankfully this meant I could begin with a hearty 'French Onion Soup' - w/ sourdough rye and Gruyere cheese.

I had never had traditional French onion soup, and was definitely not expecting the grilled Gruyere topped sourdough to be floating in it. But it was perfection! How the bread soaks up the sweet, caramelized onion flavour contrasted by the tangy Gruyere…all those flavours in soup!

Until the main course arrived, N and I reflected on the perfect past five days. I wanted to take a "last supper" photo, but she got a bit emotional and told me off! :)

So I took a picture of the pretty details of the place instead!

And then our 'Mushroom, Spinach & Ricotta Stuffed Cannelloni' - w/ sage lemon butter sauce, almonds and shaved parmesan arrived.

There's not much I can say about these, except that they were the perfect conclusion to the fabulous culinary experiences that we had in New York City! And so we went to bed with full and happy bellies, and planned to have a peaceful last sleep in the city of dreams

Yours truly,
