Mother's, Father's, Daughter's Day

I took a couple of days off, to gallivant about town with Mama in tow. My aim was to acclimatise her back to the Munich air and show her my food-haunts.

After a stroll through the inner-city we headed to my old 'hood of Untergiesing to one of my favourite restaurants - 'Miss Lilly's'.

It was a glorious day, so we perched ourselves beneath the pergola and watched the world go by.

The first time I visited Miss Lilly's, I was taken by the attention to detail of the interior, with it's many cozy candles. But even the outdoor area has some cute lanterns floating in the tree.

We shared the warm roasted potato salad for a main.

And rhubarb-quark cake and a miniature carrot cake for dessert.

After a quick refresh at home, we returned to the oldtown to meet one of Mama's oldest friends - the lovely Lissi - for dinner at 'Prinz Myshkin'. Just as the sun drenched the Rathaus in its final golden glow.

Prinz Myshkin specialises on vegetarian cuisine, which is of course convenient for us pescitarians.

These two are about as crazy as each other, which makes them very entertaining company.

The food didn't blow my bind and was presented a bit unlovingly (not how I like food to be treated!) the flavour of the "house" specialities however were very tasty. The 'Tartufo Affogato' was the highlight!

And that was Mother's Day, or rather Mama's Day.

A week later, Papa turned up, and after a bit of an early morning debacle as the battery from our rental car turned out to be flat, and we had to wait almost an hour for the Skoda-man to rescue us, we picked him up from the airport.

Papa really couldn't have planned his arrival any better, since it was Father's Day back in New Zealand. And so the three SoulFoods were reunited back on German soil - for a few weeks at least! A day so special for me that it felt like it was Daughter's Day instead!

After an unfortunately pretty hectic yet entertaining brunch at 'Vorstadt Cafe', we took a digestive meander through the Englischer Garten and headed for the lakeside Biergarten, since I had promised Papa a proper Bavarian Bier for Father's Day. It wasn't quite past noon, so we took a boat ride to work up a bit of a thirst.

Since I arrived in Munich and discovered the boats moored at the foot of the 'Seehaus' I had wanted to go for a paddle!

While Papa and I paddled our hearts out, Mama was quite content to nap in the back. After we'd lapped the lake a couple of times, we decided Mama had had enough nap time and so we headed for the willows to give her a willowy wake-up call…

You can just see that she still found this amusing.

The Biergarten was a tad too packed for our liking and Mama was after some decent cake. So instead we opted for a seat on one of the balconies of the Seehaus

Where Mama got some splendid cake…

…and Papa his well deserved Father's Day beer!

And since I can't just watch other people indulging in the pleasure of an icy beer, I ordered one for myself as well! I had done a lot of paddling, and it was also Daughter's Day after all!

Prost!

Yours truly,
