Ransom Wine's platters -worth the King's ransom

When Theresa arrived she was two hours late...The Fräulein had got truly concerned as to whether Theresa had got lost in transit, and furthermore if she would ever be able to pay the horrendous parking charges and leave Auckland International Airport. Finally, when Theresa appeared, it was...exciting to say the least!

On her first day in the country we already had our first lunch date with my "work family" who (upon leaving the job!) had kindly given me a voucher for a lunch date with them for anywhere I chose. We had plenty of  reason to celebrate as it was one of my "sister's" birthday, and another "sister" (this one truly from another mister!) had also left her job in the meantime. AND of course we had to welcome Theresa into the country!
The ladies of leisure.

The lunch place of my choice was to be Ransom, who serve the best platters I've ever laid my eyes and tastebuds on. It amazes me that in our area (Matakana) in particular, famous for its (overrated) Farmers' Market and apparent emphasis on "keeping it fresh, keeping it local", not more of the restaurants and wineries seem to be able to present food that cohere to this regional ethos. Thankfully, Ransom have got it right.

The Winemaker's platter, one we had a while back...

Their platters, or more specifically the Winemaker's platter is the crowning glory of platters. Served on a platter made of the staves of their wine barrels (those are the vertical, curved, wooden bits), covered in wine leaves, the Winemaker's is a feast of homemade dips and salads accompanied by wild game meats, and local cheeses. Perfection. More importantly, consistent perfection. It is always fresh and the various breads including slices of five-grain, ciabatta and baguette are always still warm.

The King's feast for five.

In all honesty, I am not so much a wine appreciator, the Fräulein is more into her champagne...however between the five of us we managed to demolish three bottles of wine. My favourite being their Vin Gris.

Welcome to NZ Theresa!

I think it was a splendid introduction to NZ, whiling away the hours overlooking the Ransom vineyard.

Yours truly,
Fräulein SoulFood x
