Rainy Regensburg

The weekend after Mama arrived, was our long-awaited "girl's weekend". After all that time apart and all that redundancy, unemployed, job- and flathunting-stress, a mini break was definitely deserved. A weekend of wellness, massages, catch ups and lying around doing nothing much at all…bliss.

To include a spot of culture on the way to our wellness hotel (and to convince ourselves that we weren't being too lazy), we stopped by the quaint city of Regensburg, most famous for its dome.

Obviously this picture would've been a 100 times nicer with the backdrop of a clear, blue sky. But since 'Regensburg' literally translates to "rain-castle" I had an inkling that our time in Regensburg, would in fact be rainy. At least I already knew how to title this blogpost!

We'd had an early start, and our first stop was for breakkie, at 'Anna liebt Brot & Kaffee' ("Anna loves bread & coffee").

So does Fraeulein SOulFood!

This "mini-franchise" originated right in Regensburg, in a generous space with vaulted ceilings which once housed a tobacco factory.

Kind of like a cave, filled with the scent of freshly baked sourdough bread, mingling with the smell of roasted coffee…A place for foodies to worship! This being the altar…

As the name would suggest, the highlights of 'Anna liebt Brot & Kaffee' are the bread, and the coffee! And everything that comes along with it - like homemade cakes and ice cream.

We decided that it was a tad too early for ice cream, and went for the toasted bread with potato, cheese and rosemary…

…and bread with three dips of our choice: honey, mustard, prawn cocktail and tuna.

As well as some fresh Bircher Muesli.

All were…heavenly!

Despite the dreary weather, we took a stroll through the colourful Old Town.

We discovered an internal courtyard with a bit of a bottle collection.

One of my favourite kind of bottles!

There wasn't much else to see or do, but someone to visit upon Kathi's recommendation - 'Dampfnudel Uli'. 'Dampfnudel' are a traditionally Bavarian kind of steamed, yeast dumpling typically filled with plums. Dampfnudel Uli is known to make the best Dampfnudel in the country.

He can be found in a tower. Since we were already there, we figured we may as well test Uli's Dampfnudeln!

We were lucky to score one of the few tables - Dampfnudel Uli is an institution. A museum stuffed with curiosities and pictures of famous personalities that have tested Uli's Dampfnudeln before us.

Usually when there isn't a picture of the food I consumed, it was because it was so good that I forgot to take one! Which was the case with these Dampfnudel floating in a creamy vanilla sauce…Thanks for the tip Kathi!

We let a couple of American tourists join our table. We're quite generous like that. But we only share tables with strangers, not food. Despite this, we must've impressed them with our English skills, since they insisted to pay for our Dampfnudel! Too kind!

By now it was almost afternoon tea time. Since we had found nothing better, we headed back to Anna's. This time to try the coffee…and cake.

Besides, the giant golden sphere floating on the wall of the cafe was the only thing we were going to see all day that could come close to resembling the sun.

Sometimes you just have to make your own sunshine!

Still, we called it a day in rainy Regensburg and headed to our hotel for some r&r.

More about that tomorrow!

Yours truly,
