Ladies who lunch...brunch, picnic, BBQ & biergarden

Several of you have commented on how lovely my friends seem, and they are! So I figured it was time I caught you up on my socialising over the past weeks. I mentioned that the past few weeks have been a bit tough, but thanks to my friends, there have also been plenty of wonderful times.

After my redundancy I was suddenly free to divide my time how I pleased, and there was no way I could spend all day writing job applications - a girl's gotta eat after all (and we know I'm good at that!) - so my social life flourished. There have been plenty of lunches, brunches, parties, picnics, BBQs and Biergarten visits…

My first lunch date was with the lovely Luefchen. She works in the popular 'Glockenbach' quarter (home to football superstars such as Bastian Schweinsteiger), which is stuffed with cafe, after restaurant, after bar. I picked her up from her design office around the corner and we headed to Melcher's for lunch!

Oi missy! Stop texting those silly boys!
That's better! :)
Luefchen's goat cheese salad, with prosciutto-wrapped dates.
My tuna carpaccio with wasabi peas, ginger and shaved horseradish.
Of course a ladies' lunch must be followed by dessert, for which I chose a chocolate fondant. Unfortunately this was not just molten on the inside, but still raw and tasted like dough. But the tuna carpaccio was the perfect refreshment during the lunchtime heat!

Then there was a brunch on Julia's balcony. I needed some legal advice from my lawyer friend, and as it's always better to combine friendly business matters with plenty of (eating) pleasure, so we made a brunch of it.

The night before, Luefchen and I had attended a 90's style 'Hyper! Hyper!' party

…from which I was still mildly suffering as I had only had three hours of sleep. Of course brunch without bubbles is just breakfast, so despite my hangover, we had some of those too! It perked me right up again! :)

By the time we had finished, her brother had just got back from his holiday, so the catch up continued well into the afternoon. Before I hurried to another Julia's place for her birthday and flatwarming. Unfortunately this is the only iPhone quality photo I could get my hands on, but not even images could've captured the barrels of laughs we had that night, thanks to ridiculous drinking games and crazy Austrians!

Flo, Schubi & Schenzi.
The following week it was back to some serious job-hunting business. I had scored the interview with Haeberlein & Mauerer. In my humble opinion I felt I nailed the interview, and as I left, my gut already told me I had the job! So to reward my gut, I treated myself to lunch at a recently opened cafe that I had passed a few times - the 'Waldmeisterei'.

Their small but varied menu changes daily and features fresh, seasonal ingredients. I had the feta and spinach quiche with a perfectly dressed salad. The space used to house a dusty stationery shop run by a similarly dusty old chap. Elements of this have been retained within the new fit out such as the old school-chairs, but modern accents such as the sleek, typographic prints freshen the place up!

I think It still needs a bit of time until the place is full, but I can only recommend the food and the setting. Strangely it is closed in the weekends (only open for breakkie on Saturdays), but maybe if we all visit regularly during the week, they will change their mind about that?! A worthy addition to Schwabing in any case!

As the month continued, the weather stabilised and pulled out every ray of sunshine! This called for picnics in the Englischer Garten.

Unfortunately forgot the glasses...
As well as trips to local lakes! My friend Anni conveniently has her car in the city, so she packed me, her friend Vanessa and her little bucket BBQ and we headed for a lakeside adventure!

Feldmochinger See.
Of course we figured you probably shouldn't just light up your BBQ anywhere, but since there were no signs informing us otherwise we found ourselves a spot of shade and tried to get our bucket burning.

Well, sounds simple enough, but since we had no firestarter we had to improvise. We tried some of the tufts of dry grass floating about, surely they would light up enough to get our coal glowing?! Nope. We collected some seemingly dry twigs…nope. Paper! Paper burns! For about 20 seconds. We tried everything, including making twig-tongs to try and get one of the coal to burn!

After fifteen minutes of huddling around the bucket, we sensed the amusement of males surrounding us, their thoughts screaming "How many blondes does it take to start a fire???". At least we could laugh at ourselves!

Vanessa struggling to contain herself!
In the end we had to resort to google and Anni's boyfriend, to learn that the trick is to build a teepee! And then, there was fire!

Another chick I've been hanging out with a lot lately is the cool, calm and collected Kathi. I think Kathi is secretly a Kiwi on the inside, because I've never met someone who is quite so chilled out. It's like she's the "She'll be right"-attitude personified! Around the office she was also known as "Miss Happy", since her response to most things was "clap along if you feel like a room without a roof!"…

Apart from having learned to surf and kite-surf, she has recently taken up longboarding. For a few Sundays now, I've caught up with Kathi after her longboarding session, and we sit at the feet of the Bavaria and philosophise about life, love and everything in between.

The mighty 'Bavaria'.

Since life and love are a couple of exhaustive topics, we have also made it a habit to stop by the 'Bavaria Biergarten' around the corner for a regenerative 'Radler' (aka 'Shandy').

There have been several great Biergarten visits recently, but this had the most spectacular sunset

Munich Summer perfection.
The perfect end to my period of unemployment. More about the biergardens another time!

Yours truly,
