Eat & Style

While I sit at my kitchen table, illuminated only by a couple of candles, and snowflakes flurry past the window before a washed out sky, I am reveling in the memories of a colourful October and November.

One of the things I love about blogging and I suppose photography and writing in general is this - the power to take oneself back to a certain time, a moment. The great writer Anaïs Nin wrote that "We write to taste life twice", and there is certainly truth to that.

So in order to relive a couple of glorious months, I best get some words on the page!

One of the perks of my job, or more specifically being part of the "food team" at our PR firm, is getting to attend "foodie" events as part of our work. So when the 'eat & STYLE' food-festival came to town, we knew where our team would be headed that Friday afternoon.

Anyone can get tickets, and the concept of this food-festival is to identify and introduce current food trends - hence the "style" part. It presents countless exhibitors showcasing the latest - but not always greatest - foods and food-related products.

I must say, I wasn't so inspired by this part, since most of the things you could actually try at the stalls were either nothing new, or you had to queue for too long. As usual, I was hungry. Which had me feeling a bit like this guy…

I really felt for him - I'd be bummed too if my owner happily ordered herself something at one of the food trucks from the "foodtruck-court" and I was left waiting.

So I wouldn't have to resort to looking at my colleagues with sad puppy eyes, I hunted through the "foodtruck-court" in search of something veggie. There wasn't all too much for vege- or pescetarians to choose from. Surprising considering the current Vegan trend.

Thankfully, the 'Grillin' me softly' foodtruck - Munich's first foodtruck - was present. Run by a couple of young guns, one of whom I happen to know, 'Grillin' me softly' offers super fresh, New York inspired street food. Their classics include the 'China Town', 'Upper East' and 'King of Queens' sandwiches, as well as a 'SoHo' salad. Specific burgers, tacos and Hawaiian banana bread count to the "specials".

Unfortunately most of the things include meat, but I was lucky and one of the specials that day was a vegetarian kind of taco, which wasn't called taco, but something else with "t" and I can't for the life of me remember the name and Google isn't helping…

But it looked like this:

I believe this one was made with corn flour, and fried/toasted on the outside, which gave it an unusual texture and provided a pleasant contrast to the starchiness of the beans, and zinginess of the tomatoes and coriander. Hmmm…

May I suggest that you order a side of the sweet potato fries with chipotle-mayo, because you won't quite be satisfied with one little taco and just because they are delicious!

I got a bit distracted catching up with Sascha, and failed to take a picture of the truck itself (my bad…). But check out their snazzy site, where the boys also keep you up to date as to their whereabouts, so you won't miss the 'Grillin' me softly' foodtruck when it's in your Munich 'hood!

While the others chatted, I was busy tucking into my wee feast.

My colleague Pablo got a bit jealous…

And though he tried to pull puppy eyes at me, I wasn't about to share.

After my hunger had been satisfied, we moved into the other exhibition space, which had less stalls and the cooking-stage instead.

We were just in time to check out one of Germany's Vegan cooking-queens, the very likable Nicole Just.

She talked about how she got into her Vegan lifestyle and demonstrated a Vegan (Beetroot) Carpaccio, with some kind of "Quark"-dumplings. While I wasn't so inspired that I wanted to convert from pescitarianism to veganism, I was inspired to spend more time in the kitchen again preparing food, and not just consuming it.

So the next few weeks were spent between taking my time to prepare some treats in the kitchen, as well as soaking up the late Autumn sunshine.

Brunch: Eggs on avo, on cream cheese, on toast…

…was savoured while enjoying the view from our kitchen onto the neighbours pretty blossoms.

Before lunch was served: roast Autumn veggies.

Prior to a walk in the Englischer Garten and the central city.

Of course after all that walking in the crisp air, I was feeling pekish again and whipped up an apple and plum crumble for my flatmate and me.

Which we took with us and had a small picnic in the park, followed by a digestive nap (which is what my flatmate Nora is attempting to do here…).

During these glorious days, I was also shown a secret garden very close to my work, where anyone is allowed to wander in and enjoy this wee green oasis in the middle of the city - the perfect place to escape to for a lunch away from the desk!

Speaking of work, it was also in October that work was putting on the event of the opening of the new Timberland store in Munich. Of course I was on the list with a plus one - Miss Luefchen. We were very much in our element socialising, relishing the drinks and flying food.

The speciality of this event was that the editor of InStyle Men styled guests in Timberland looks for their personal, professional cover shoot.

There was even a professional makeup artist to transform us.

And designers who Photoshopped their hearts out.

When Luefchen's turn came to have her makeup done, of course she preferred to take matters into her own hands!

We whipped on our chosen "look" and posed away, resulting in this final cover. Out of all the pictures we shot in that minute, I'm pretty sure this wasn't the most flattering, but I won't argue with the professionals… :)

They say modeling is tough work - and I can only attest to that! But thankfully the store also has a chill out corner, where we plonked ourselves amongst the Proteas…

…to catch up on the latest fashion-styles and indulge and some dessert.

Which reminds me, I also made some deliciously tangy lemon slice that month…

…which I also shared with my flatmate and colleagues - we are the "food-team" after all!

And the resounding feedback:

That is all for today!

Yours truly,
