Waiheke -Sculpture on the Gulf

After Mama and Fraeulein SoulFood's disappointing dinner in Auckland the previous night, we were looking forward to a walk that would take us out of the city and our mind completely off of food. Well, not completely! (Food is always lurking at the back of Fraeulein SoulFood's mind somewhere...). Quite frankly, I probably wouldn't have found the energy to do the two hour walk along the coast of Waiheke and then furthermore on to the village of Oneroa, had it not been for the knowledge of the delectable lunch that awaited us. More on this later.

As we boarded the ferry in Auckland Harbour, the sky was grey and started spitting on us. However, with every meter that we headed away from the big smoke and toward Waiheke the the sun peeked out, ray by ray. As if it were encouragingly coaxing us toward the little island paradise just 45 minutes ferry ride away. The main reason for our island visit, was the headland Sculpture on the Gulf sculpture trail. Essentially an outdoor exhibition of thirty works of art by emerging and established artists. In honesty, this years sculptures were not as inspiring to us as those a couple of years back, what never seizes to fascinate us however, is the beauty of New Zealand nature that this coastline walk allows you to glimpse. Check out some of the snapshots of this year's sculptures below, but if you want to see the real highlights, including stunning views back toward the Auckland skyline, make sure you do the walk yourself! On a fine day of course.

View over part of the walk ahead, with silhouette of volcano Rangitoto in the background.

Contemporary poppy field?

Left over Christmas baubles draped upon Pohutukawa tree.

A cave? No! Tiny hollowed out concrete blocks.

View through to the other side.

May I present, my new man. (NB: The bruise on my calf is not from him spanking me with his spatula, just a classic 'learning-to-surf' injury...)

Contemporary, container version of traditional Maori 'Whare', meeting house.

Typical New Zealand material; corrugated iron.

Me in front of my new 'bach', Kiwi-speak for holiday home, found mostly on beaches.

Oh no! Too small...or rather I'm too big. :(

Ah well, only little laundry to do.

Hope I have inspired you for a visit to wonderful Waiheke?! Will tell you about my secretly amazing lunch spot on the island tomorrow.

Until then,

Fräulein SoulFood x
