Vino in Verona

On our last day at Lago di Garda, the weather didn't much improve. But since we were headed home anyway we decided to make the best of it and pop by Verona on our way back to reality.

We passed several small towns with the most impressive town halls on the way…

Soon we left the small towns and rolling hills behind us…

…and reached the colourful facades of Verona.

Of course Verona is a popular destination bustling with tourists.

This was a bit of a shock to the system, after our two days of twosomeness. To deal with the shock, we dove into the next gelateria and ordered some sugar to share: a kiss from Romeo…

…and and one from Juliet.

We drifted between the alleys, pulled by the crowd between characterful architecture.

After we had explored most of the old town and discovered some quirky architectural details, our tummies let us know that it was around lunchtime.

So we skipped the architecture and dove into another alleyway for lunch. Dante wasn't impressed…

…but as if I'd let that stop me!

The lovely lady from our accommodation had recommended we pay 'Bottega del Vino' a visit.

Unfortunately, Google Translate did a pretty poor job of translating and I can't really rhyme together the history of the place, but one only has to scan a couple of the hundreds of bottles of vino lining the walls to realise this place has history.

Even more impressive - the wine list, which I would rather refer to as a "wine-bible".

Hundreds of pages still bound with string.

Though our food was delicious, the lighting of Bottega del Vini wasn't really ideal for food-photography. So instead of showing you some unappetising photos, I will just tell you what we had.

The creamiest burratta with salty sardines and grilled fennel, served with homemade walnut-bread, as well as some crispy fried polenta topped with melted gorgonzola…hmmm.

Of course we had some vino too, but since the Mr. still had to drive us home, I did the gentlewomanly thing and settled the bill so we could get on our way. Even the bill came in a booklet covered in vintage wine labels.

And paying the bill was sweetened for us - literally! Since one is served the nuttiest, most almond-fragranced biscotti I have ever come across! I was almost tempted to drink another round just to have to pay again…

But Munich was calling and we made our way back, for more culinary adventures to be had there.

More about that another time in the meantime - happy Sunday!

Yours truly,
